I spoke with a friend via a phone call early in the month of January 2020, and before the call ended, he said, “this is the decade most of us would get married, especially the ladies” (paraphrased). This got me thinking a lot about marriage and I sought to understand what it is all about. I can’t say I have fully comprehended it, but at this stage of my life, I have this to say.
God created man, Adam, and gave him a sense of purpose and duty, but as man carried out his duty, God saw that it was not good that man was alone, so he came up with a plan to make woman, and this brought about the first communion between a man and a woman, the first marriage.
Then the Lord God said, “It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper who is just right for him” (Genesis 2:18, NLT).
Now the Lord God said, “It is not good (beneficial) for the man to be alone; I will make him a helper [one who balances him — a counterpart who is] suitable and complementary for him” (Genesis 2:18, AMP).
First, man had a purpose; next, he needed help in the accomplishment of his duty. I have come to understand that when an individual is born, s/he is dependent, but is meant to grow into interdependency; that means, in all doings, would need help; s/he would need some form of support for the fulfilment of destiny.
This brings about the system of marriage; it is a communion of two people with a sense of divine purpose, who come together to help in the fulfilment of each other’s destiny. When they both join together, their destinies increase, because each individual’s destiny becomes the responsibility of the other. This they do as they build a home and procreate.
“That is why a man leaves his father and mother and is united with his wife, and they become one” (Genesis 2:24, GNT).
In our generation, there are a lot of inconsistencies in marriages, which indeed negates the purpose of marriage as designed by God. Permit me to conclude that when a person marries the right spouse, his/her two hands increase to four (that is more strength and ability toward the fulfilment of purpose and destiny), but when there is a wrong joining, it leads to the person having one of his/her hands cut off (that is, a lag is introduced in the fulfilment of purpose and destiny).
“Marriage is to be honored by all, and husbands and wives must be faithful to each other…” (Hebrews 13:4, GNT).
In all, marriage is the communion of two people who know who they are personally (their goals, their sense of purpose, and destinies); who come together to help each other towards making accelerated progress.
Permit me to add; all marriages need the divine approval of God for their true fulfilment.
“… only the Lord can give an understanding wife” (Proverbs 19:14, NLT).
“Find a good spouse, you find a good life — and even more: the favor of God!” (Proverbs 18:22, MSG).
Kindly read Proverbs 31.
PS: There is more to marriage than what is written in this article. I hope that this article has touched a bit on the “why” and “what” of marriage.
Thank you for reading.
